Perlite is a fantastic mixer for soil and other media because of the benefits it gives. Most manufacturers of soil include it as part of their “recipe” at a mix ratio of around 5%. Perlite is a great aerator for soil which helps raise oxygen content in the media. Sometimes good quality media can become a bit clogged and roots may end up suffering if the user consistently overwaters it. Perlite not only aerates but also assists draining.
Many plants can benefit for a higher level of mixers such as this, especially in auto watering systems. Autopot, for example, suggest that a 60/40 or 50/50 mix is ideal. In these systems, the plant has as much or as little water it needs so there is no risk of drying out. In this situation, the high amount of Perlite in the media allows far higher oxygen to make it to the root zone. With plenty of water and oxygen the plant is free to thrive!
What exactly is Perlite?
Perlite is a volcanic glass that has undergone heating to 1600F (871 C) where it pops like popcorn. When it does, it expands 13 times its original size which makes it a very low density material. It is full of tiny air compartments with an outside that absorbs moisture very well. This makes it the ideal product to mix with media as the roots have a ready supply of water and air.
What are the alternatives to Perlite?
At Canterbury Hydroponics, we have a few other products that gardeners add to soil to improve it. These include Vermiculite and clay pebbles (House & Garden 10L or Aqua Pebbles 45L). Pre-mixed medias we stock are Ecothrive Coco lite 70/30 and Gold Label Hydro/Coco 60/40. Products that charge the media with beneficial minerals and microbes include Biobizz Pre-Mix, Worm Humus, Ecothrive Charge and Life Cycle. You can find all the other mixers, microbes and teas on our website, here.
